Writer.Rider.Cook.

Sharon P. Holland is an award-winning author whose practice is always eclectic. She moves beyond what is possible, asking those uncomfortable questions, but basking in the joy of discovery whether it be with pen, rein, or ladle. She writes, rides and cooks in the place where her familial ancestors have resided since before the Revolutionary War. In whatever genre or creative iteration she explores, you will find a deep commitment to the aesthetic in all of its forms, to the lives of non-human others, always, and to what it means to be fed.

Those Who Eat

This new project follows in the deep imprint of MFK Fisher’s work. In a way, the book is a war companion piece for a different sort of conflict, but still one for which we need to have courage and face the wolf head on. As a person whose identity forms an intersection – as someone Black, female, and queer – I have pursued an academic career for over 30 years that focuses on this intersection across a spectrum of work in what we call “American Studies.”

But I have found my answers to so many questions – chief among them, how to cook a wolf? – while preparing, cooking, and eating food. It has been my way to communicate my difference, lovingly to those at my table or someone else’s. Food has been how I bridge gaps in age, class, race, gender, and sexuality – it has been a balm when other forms of understanding do not materialize, or a profound lack of necessary knowledge persists.
