Queer Eyes: Readings of “Outsider” Art
“Queer Eyes” attempts to think through the relationship between Sexuality studies (and its various objects) and that category called "outsider" art.
I have already published two pieces that will be part of the book project, one of which is the first essay in the exhibition catalogue, The Unfinished Business of Unsettled Things (University of North Carolina Press, 2022). While my first two essays in this potential monograph focus on artists Ronald Lockett, Samuel Doyle, and Purvis Young, I am hoping to make great headway on three other chapters in the project, one on J. Alan Cumbey (d. 1992), another on Greta Boney (Raleigh, NC), and a third featuring the work of artist team Georgia and Henry Speller. I hope that this project's look at sexuality and representation will change the way we see and understand outsider art and the way in which Sexuality studies chooses its object(s).
